Top 5 Exercises to Keep Kids Active
01.12.2017The onset of winter brings with it a great deal of excitement and challenge in equal measure.
A typical tropical winter offers people a welcome change from otherwise warm and sultry conditions – the ideal weather to incubate laziness, tardiness, and glorious slumber.
Parents are no strangers to these effects of cosy winter weather on their children. Waking them up for school turns into an ordeal just as getting them to leave the comfort of a couch for some outdoor activities becomes close to impossible.
Comfort, or too much of it in this case, could have an adverse impact on your children’s health and fitness. The human body, owing to the colder climate, has already switched to storing fat to insulate vital organs. Exercise is therefore crucial to ensuring that your child doesn’t pile on the pounds.
Here are 5 exercises that keep your child active during the winter months:
1) Skipping
Skipping is a great indoor exercise that you can encourage your kids to pick up.
10 minutes of skipping helps strengthen the legs, shoulders, core, and arms whilst also burning the same number of calories equivalent to that of a 45 minute run.
Use interesting challenges to keep them engaged with a skipping rope and help them remain active, energised and most importantly, healthy.
2) Active Sports
Indoor sports could play a vital role in keeping your children healthy and active. Badminton, Tennis, Swimming, Basketball, Futsal and other such indoor activities offer opportunities for physical exertion and engage children who enjoy sport. These activities, individual or team-based, also offer social-bonding situations where children can interact with peers and improve their social skills.
3) Fancy a dance-off?
Dancing is a fantastic physical activity to burn calories and improve cardio.
Usually associated with self-expression and the performance arts as opposed to fitness and health, dance finds easy acceptance amongst children and is in itself a great cardio workout.
Different styles of dance are effective in many ways and help strengthen the core, burn calories, in addition to giving your kids a medium to express themselves.
4) Participate in activities/challenges with your kids
Fun runs, charity walks, trampolines, and outdoor camps are effective ways to get your child out in the open and active. These activities also help with family-bonding and offer recreational opportunities for children, with the added benefit of physical and mental exercise. In a world where distractions for children are aplenty, fun-filled activities involving physical activity are boons towards keeping them healthy and fit.
5) Do chores together
House-hold chores provide opportunities for children to engage in physical exercise. Simple chores like washing a car, setting a table, cleaning up a room, and gardening tasks keep both your child’s mind and body engaged. Moreover, teaching your child the value of responsibility is a bonus that accompanies these tasks. A life lesson learnt and calories burnt, does it get any better?
Make ‘Active’ your theme for the winter season and help your children reap the benefits of physical and mental well-being.
