Nutrition, exercise prompt weight loss
18.05.2019It all boils down to resistance training and proper food portions.
So many times I’m asked, “Doctor, why can’t I lose weight? I barely eat anything at all. I skip breakfast, have a salad for lunch and a small dinner. What’s wrong with me?”
How many of you can relate to this? When I ask them about exercise, the usual answer is one of the following:
-
- I’m too tired after work.
-
- I walk all day at work.
-
- I do a lot of work around the house.
-
- I don’t have time.
-
- I do my cardio for 30 minutes a day.
And those responses are the very reason why most, if not all, people are not able to lose weight. It all boils down to proper nutrition and proper exercise.
Lean tissue (muscle) must be fed and stimulated if you want to lose body fat. Consider this: Can your car run on fumes?
The old wood-burning train engine required constant stoking for the engine to run hot and fast. Same for human beings.
That means multiple small meals each day, with the portion size to be tailored to the individual.
By eating the correct foods, a person’s basal metabolic rate can be increased by up to 20 percent. In other words, eating food to lose body fat.
Novel concept, right?
OK, what about exercise?
Solely performing aerobic/cardiovascular exercise will not raise the metabolic rate to burn body fat. In order for the body to burn body fat, the exercise must be continuous for greater than 90 minutes.
So, who has the time to do this?
However, properly performed resistance training, three times a week, will raise the basal metabolic rate for muscle recovery for the ensuing 36 hours.
What happens at a physiologic cellular level is tapping into the fat-burning pathways on the inner membrane of the cell’s mitochondrion. It’s called the palmitoyl-carnitine shunt.
The more lean tissue a person has, the more fat can be burned.
And don’t worry, women will not develop muscle like a man because they don’t have the requisite levels of testosterone.
As for men, I see male patients whose bodies have not responded to the exercise and, for some, it is due to low testosterone levels.
If you are frustrated, I encourage you to discuss these facts with your physician.
