Science says eating protein is the fastest way to burn belly fat
25.05.2019Cutting carbs, calories and fat (well, for those who don’t opt for the keto diet) are the first steps most people take when they decide they want to lose weight.
But according to a new study published in the US National Library of Medicine, we shouldn’t be looking at cutting out foods. Instead, we should be focusing on adding more of one specific food: protein.
The researched showed consuming more high-protein foods caused the metabolism to increase by 15 to 30 per cent.
This was much higher compared to carbs, which increased the metabolism by five to 10 per cent, while fat only increased from zero to three per cent.
High-protein foods include meats, fish, nuts, beans, pulses and eggs.
The research proves eating a diet high in protein will help dieters lose weight and burn fat quicker than prioritising any other food group.
Furthermore, another study published in the US National Library of Medicine showed those who ate protein-rich foods for 30 per cent of their diet ate 441 fewer calories each day.
Nutritionist Susie Burrell notes that a diet low in protein is one of the main reasons behind your cravings and bad snacking habits.
“Protein as a nutrient is digested more slowly than carbohydrate and as such helps to control hormone levels in the body and keep us full,” she tells myBody+Soul.
“For this reason, ensuring that your meals include 20-30g of protein and your snacks 5-10g will help with appetite management through the day.”
“Often light breakfast meals of toast or cereal, or lunches of plain salad or sandwiches can mean your protein intake during the first half of the day is relatively low, which in turn can fuel late afternoon hunger. Adding eggs or Greek yoghurt to your breakfast and 100-150 of lean meat, chicken, fish to your lunch will help to manage this and help you avoid overeating late in the day.”
Bottom line: make sure to eat protein at each meal to boost your metabolism, which will in turn, burn fat quicker.
