Your guide to Picking a New Gym
02.01.2018As cliché as it sounds, including a whole new list of fitness goals as part of that long list of New Year resolutions is a ritual we go through every year. Whether we stick to them or not (we highly recommend that you do), it becomes vitally important that you choose the correct tools to help you tick them off your list.
A gym could be one of those solutions. If you’re anxious about joining one, fear not. You’re only one among many who experience this anxiety; in fact this barrier serves as one of the stepping stones to kick start your fitness journey.
Here are a few thoughts to keep in mind while picking your new gym.
Step 1: Do you want to join a gym in the first place?
For starters, a gym isn’t the only tool available at your disposal. It’s a common misnomer propagated in society that a gym membership is the only pathway leading to fitness. If you enjoy working outdoors, exercising at home, or at a fitness centre located in workplace environment, a gym membership is nothing but redundant.
Step 2: List down your must-haves
Different fitness goals each demand a set of requisites. Open space, equipment, shower-facilities etc are some of the many features you could consider. Neatness, cleanliness, hygiene, and maintenance of equipment should also determine your final choice. When closely observed, you would be surprised as to how many gyms fail to hold up against even the most basic levels of scrutiny.
Step 3: Narrow down locations
Pick potential gyms that reduce travelling as much as possible. Factor in your travelling routes, work-schedule, and daily routines into figuring out how you could make time for the gym. A conveniently located gym saves time, effort, and reduces instances of laziness, tardiness, and lethargy by negating ‘distance’ as a potential excuse.
Ideally a gym should be located not more than a 20 minute drive from your home or workplace.
Step 4: Take a Trial Run
This is when you find out for certain if a marketing message meets mettle. Test equipment and interact with trainers to gauge if they’re qualified and well-informed. The trainers govern your progress and level of fitness over the coming months and it hence becomes imperative that you make assess them thoroughly while you sample gyms closest to you. In addition to the above, also interact with regulars to get their two cents on past experiences.
Once you have completed the above 4 steps, you are finally now in a position to make your pick. Most gyms usually offer discounted packages to lock in customers in the New Year season so this provides you with ample pricing options to choose from.
Point to note, the price isn’t everything i.e. the cheapest gym doesn’t necessarily provide you the most value. A fitness centre, by itself alone, should be a motivating factor to push you more than ever before. Great trainers and fantastic facilities will behave as natural stimulants to get you pumped up to sweat it out every day. A wise decision here and you could be looking at a whole new you soon enough!
2018 is almost upon us. Here’s to a healthy year ahead!
