• 7 Reasons For Feeling Tired All The Time

    22.04.2018

Have you ever woken up to only feel like you hadn’t slept all night and hit by waves of fatigue halfway through your busy day? Well, you’re not the only one. A lot of people suffer from fatigue and lack of energy and here we have a few possible reasons.

    1. Diet

A balanced diet gives you the necessary calories and nutrients needed by your body to function properly and stay healthy. However, we’ve noticed that the quality of our diets have decreased. The lack of sufficient nutrition makes us permanently tired, and in the long run weakens our body, making us unfit. Even eating at odd hours, overeating and/or under eating can affect wellbeing of our body.

If the constant tiredness is the result of a poor diet, here are a few things that will help:

    • Balance your diet: you need to consume the right amount of nutrients for your body type, so don’t skimp on these!
    • Get enough proteins: Protein is a macronutrient and an important building block of your body. Getting the required amount of protein ensures that your body functions optimally, and keeps you energised during the day. Supplements are a good way to regulate your protein intake, if it is lacking from your diet. Proliva’s Sport Recovery enhances endurance by giving you additional energy that lasts through the day.
    • Eat regularly: eat 5-6 small meals a day instead of 3 big meals because they will keep you full and increase your metabolism.
    • Hydrate: drink at least 2 liters of water daily

    2. Sleep

When we wake up in the morning, we expect to feel refreshed. Sometimes, even after 8 hours of sleep however, we wake up feeling tired and it might persist through the day. This is a problem that arises from the quality of the sleep. Insufficient sleep is extremely harmful to our body, it can even cause an imbalance in our hormones and make us moody! Reduced attention spans and memory retention are additional consequences.

We can remedy this by fixing our sleep cycle:

    • Setting a fixed time to go to bed and wake up every day, following a set time leads to an  improved sleep cycle.
    • Reduce and/or cut out sugar and caffeine from your diet after 5 PM
    • Avoid blue-light emitting screens 2 hours before you sleep as blue light upsets the melatonin levels in your body, convincing our brains to stay awake longer

    3. Caffeine

The increased consumption of caffeinated beverages in recent times have greatly affected our energy levels. Caffeine is mostly consumed through coffee and aerated drinks. These drinks have a high sugar content which give us bursts of energy, that later dies down and causes a “crash” in our energy levels. If we use caffeine to feel less tired in the mornings, it could lead to a crash in the late afternoon or early evening at which point we consume more. This leads to our sleep cycle being affected as it causes the body to stay awake when we are tired. We can reduce our daily caffeine intake, cut it out when unnecessary and avoid consuming it after 5PM so we feel less tired.

    4. Dehydration

Dehydration is a consequence of not drinking enough water and very few people drink the amount that they really need. When we don’t have sufficient water in our body, our blood thickens and reduces its volume (making it harder for our body to circulate oxygen.) It also reduces the water content in our body cells. Water helps us flush out toxins and regulate the other bodily fluids as well. And the lack of water makes feel sluggish and lowers our energy levels. We might even mistake it for hunger and eat more than required.

    What to do:

    • Include more fruits and vegetables in your diet
    • Drink at least 2 liters of water daily at least.
    • If exercise is a part of you daily routine, its even more important to stay hydrated!

    5. Stress

Stress can cause fatigue by emotionally and physically draining us. It causes our body into go to short term survival, and over time, it can cause our health to deteriorate as it exhausts our body. This happens because it puts our body in a fight-or-flight situation where we have adrenaline coursing through us. This affects you by upsetting our natural systems and can even permanently damage your body! It can cause nausea, headaches, tense muscles, deteriorating physical and mental health, burnout and so on. We can alleviate stress through many ways, practicing meditation and yoga, taking long walks to unwind and learning to look at stressful situations with new perspectives in order to reduce the stress.

    6. Sedentary Lifestyle

With the demands of our concrete jungle lives, the sedentary lifestyle been on a rise due to the number of desk jobs, reduced exposure to natural sunlight and fresh air, and the general lack of movement or physical exertion in our everyday lives. This causes a drain in our energy making us tired due to the lack of inaction. But the sedentary lifestyle is a problem with a quick fix, we just need to move around often, stretch and expose ourselves to natural sunlight and air.

    7. Medical  Reasons

There are many physical and mental illness that can also make one very tired. The most common ones begin anemia (physical) and depression (mental), other illnesses include an underactive thyroid, sleep apnea, chronic fatigue syndrome, vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Conditions like menstruation and pregnancy can also cause long durations of being tired in women.

The important thing is to catch the problem early and identify the reasons for feeling as tired as you do. With a few lifestyle and diet changes, you are sure to see an improvement in a short span of time!
